Leaving Orlando we headed north on I-95 an hour towards Daytona Beach. After a quick drive to the Daytona Speedway for pictures, we headed to the beach and had our first dip of the toes in the Atlantic Ocean. It was a tad cool but there was no waves on this day - my kind of beach! The tide was low when we went and we saw cars paying to drive onto and park on the sand of the beach. We didn't do this but it seemed pretty popular!

St Augustine, Florida
An hour further along the beach highway A-1 was St Augustine. St Augustine was founded in 1565 and is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement and port in the continental US. There are blocks of historical buildings and cobblestone streets filled with old time charm.

The fort Castillo de San Marcos sits on the edge of the city and was never taken by force and was built of native coquina rock that absorbed the force of cannon fire.

From St Augustine we drove back on the I-95 and headed north to Savannah. As we neared the town it started to rain very very heavily again - big fat drops of water falling fiercely onto the road. When we checked into the hotel, we were told to keep an eye on the news as there was a tropical storm heading for land in the next day or so - and so we were introduced to Tropical Storm Andrea, the first tropical storm of the season to reach land. More still to come on our adventures.......
